Examples of God’s Power in the Old Testament

The name that refers to God as being all-powerful is God Almighty or El Shaddai.  We see his mightiness best through creation, for no one else can create the things found in this universe but Him.  Unlike us, God never grows weary.

Some people think that God rested on the seventh day because He was tired from the other six days of creating.  On the contrary!  He rested on the seventh day because He was finished creating.  His power will always be constant and continuous.

Because God is sovereign, He is the ultimate source of all power, authority, and everything that exists.  That means that nothing is too difficult for Him.  We see mighty miracles in the Bible of how God is supreme over nature, evil, life and death, animals, difficult circumstances, and people.

His power of sovereignty should not intimidate us if we know and trust that His character is pure love.  His desire is always for people to come to repentance and to know Him. Because of that, we can trust that He will always use His power for good and not for evil.

Stories of God’s Power in the Bible

God’s power is so amazing that some people cannot even believe some of the Stories of God’s power in the Bible actually occurred in real life!  In both the Old and New Testaments, we see God’s power over creation, sickness and death, events, and evil.

One of the most well-known Old Testament demonstrations of God’s power is when He parted the Red Sea so the Israelites could pass through.  He not only showed His power over nature but He also showed His power in battle.  Joshua won every single battle that He sought the Lord’s direction.  One battle he won simply by walking around the city walls of Jericho six times and then blowing trumpets on the seventh because God told him to!

In the New Testament, we see a lot of God’s power through His Son Jesus.  Through Jesus, the blind see, the lame walk, and the sick are made well.  Jesus even brought Lazarus and Jairus’ daughter from death to life.  He was able to command demonic spirits to enter into pigs and quiet a storm by just saying the words “Peace!  Be Still!”.  The most significant demonstration of God’s power is when He raised Jesus from the dead after three days.  This act is the saving power of the Gospel of eternal life that is available to everyone.

Bible Verses About God’s Power

There are countless verses throughout the Bible that speak to the mighty power and unfailing love of God. Whether it is through a stunning natural wonder like a storm or an awe-inspiring display of divine intervention, it is clear that God is more powerful and protective than we can ever truly comprehend. Whether we are facing trials on earth or struggles in our own lives, we can trust in the infinite power of Almighty God to keep us safe and strong through every moment.  Here are some of my favorite verses about God’s power taken from the King James Version.

“The Lord hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.” Isaiah 52:10

God’s power is holy – set apart.  He has and will continue to show all the nations on Earth that He is who He says He is.  If it is His will, He has the power to redeem and restore any group of people and any geographical place from tragedy.

“But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.” Matthew 19:26

There are many things in this world that we can find very difficult or unattainable in our life.  When Jesus was speaking to his disciples about salvation, they were baffled at who in the world could be saved according to the standards he was giving.  But nothing is impossible for a powerful God – even the narrow way of salvation which few enter.

God’s power shown through His love is so amazing that NOTHING can separate us from His love!  Paul lists a few things that are spiritual and mortal that are unable to come against the love that the Father has given us through His Son Jesus Christ.  We are eternally secure in God’s promises for us because no power in Heaven and Earth can overpower Him.

Bible Verses About God’s Power Over Evil

The Bible is full of stories about God’s power. From creation to the Exodus, God’s power is on display. In the New Testament, we see God’s power at work in the birth of Jesus Christ and the resurrection of Lazarus. Throughout Scripture, we see that God is all-powerful and able to do anything. And yet, as powerful as God is, He also uses His power to show mercy and grace. He is slow to anger and quick to forgive. Here are some additional scriptures about God’s power to reflect on.

“And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” John 1:5

In our world, we have two opposing kingdoms: the Kingdom of Light and the Kingdom of Darkness.  Even though sometimes the darkness in this world seems overwhelming, God’s power is so strong that nothing can quelch the hope, love, and truth of the Gospel.  That is one of the reasons the Bible is one of the best-selling books of all time.  No matter how dark it is, the light will continue to shine.

“How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.” Acts 10:38

God gave Jesus not only the Holy Spirit but also power.  Because of these two things, Jesus was able to heal and do good works for people who were suppressed by the enemy.  God gives us the same power and Spirit to help those who are overcome by evil.

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” Ephesians 6:10-11

Although God has already won the war, we are constantly being attacked and engaged in spiritual warfare.  If we are strong in God’s mighty power and put on all the pieces of His armor, we will be able to withstand all the attacks of the enemy.

“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” 1 John 4:4

Anyone who does not recognize Jesus truthfully has the spirit of the Antichrist.  These people will try to deceive others into believing a false gospel.  But God has given His children the ability to overcome and identify these people because He has given us His Spirit, which is more powerful than the spirit of the Antichrist.  God’s power will continue to keep us living in the truth.

And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.” Revelation 12:10

Through His mighty power, God threw Satan and his angels down to earth.  This expulsion from Heaven brings the end of Satan’s kingdom even closer where, at the right time, God will send them into the eternal pit of fire.  God has the power to put evil in its place.

Bible Verses About God’s Power and Strength

Throughout the Bible, we see countless examples of God’s incredible power and glory. The wind and waves obey his command, the sun rises and sets at his will, and creation itself was crafted by his hand. But perhaps the most powerful testimony to God’s greatness is found in his gift of salvation to all those who believe in him. Through Christ, we are given a new life full of grace, hope, and everlasting love. Just as God protects us from our enemies and carries us through difficult times, so too does he offer us refuge from our spiritual adversaries.

“Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.” Psalm 24:8

No one who comes up against God in battle will win!  His glory and strength make Him unbeatable in any fight.  To know that He is on our side should reassure us that no weapon formed against us will prosper.

“Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,” Ephesians 3:20

Because of God’s Holy Spirit in us, there is a mighty power at work that accomplishes more than we can even imagine.  He even goes beyond our requests, no matter how bold they seem.  This gives him glory in the church and through all the generations forever.

“Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:” Hebrews 1:3

God’s Son Jesus radiates His very own glory!  We are able to see God’s character through Jesus.  By His mighty power, everything is sustained, or given strength.  The animals, laws of nature, and humans can only continue to exist because of this power.

“According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:” 2 Peter 1:3

God’s power has given us everything we need to walk out the Christian life.  His glory called us to Him and His glory has given us such great promises that we are even able to share in His divine nature!

“And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof.” Revelation 21:23

God’s glory is so amazing that the Kingdom of Heaven does not need any sun or moon to give it light.  His glory illuminates the whole city!  Even the sun, with all its power, can only give light to one side of the Earth at a time.  But God’s glory is so powerful that no other light source is needed.

Scriptures About God’s Power and Authority

Throughout the scriptures, we see countless examples of God demonstrating His power and showing us just how amazing and majestic He truly is. Despite being omnipotent and all-knowing, however, God never imposes His will on others; instead, He always seeks to guide us with love and compassion.

Thine, O Lord is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and thou art exalted as head above all. Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all.” 1 Chronicles 29:11-12

God’s power and authority are over all things in Heaven and on Earth.  Because God rules over everything, He is the one who can give things such as wealth, honor, greatness, and strength to humans.  Because of His sovereignty, we look to Him as the giver of all good things.

“The Lord sitteth upon the flood; yea, the Lord sitteth King for ever.” Psalm 29:10

The Lord even has authority over the “floodwaters” or what we see as natural disasters in the world.  He is the King who ruled and reigned from the very beginning and who will continue to do so for all eternity.

“And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:” Daniel 2:21

As the King above all kings, He has the power and authority to position any ruler wherever He pleases.  Even more so, He controls world events for His purposes!  This statement may seem a little unnerving to some, but because He is a God of Love, we can trust His character even when we do not understand His actions.

“Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” Luke 10:19

Jesus has given the authority and power that God has given him to his disciples.  This transfer of authority gives them victory over ALL the power that even Satan himself has.  Nothing can and will harm believers who walk in the Holy Spirit and God’s power.

” Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.” Romans 13:1

God has all authority and all authority has been given by Him.  Can you believe that every single person in a position of power has been handpicked by Him?  His power of knowledge and wisdom places these people there in order to fulfill His great and wonderful purposes.
